I played clarinet for several years, so I noticed that something was a little different about this instrument when I found the photo I worked from. The Oehler system clarinet is the German version of the instrument, and it has a different key system than the Boehm system that most American clarinetists play.
In this painting, I focused on the intricate keywork, capturing the texture and shine of the metal against the rich, dark wood of the clarinet body. Deep browns and soft grays, with hints of warm amber and cool silver, bring out the contrast between materials. The background is a gentle wash of soft blues and greens that adds depth without competing.
