Art, Education, and a Weekend at the the Harbor: VMEA 2025 Recap
There is a special kind of energy in a room full of music educators. It’s a mix of passion, dedication, and a shared language that I have been lucky enough to witness for years through my husband’s career. But this past weekend in Norfolk, VA, at the 2025 VMEA Conference, I got to experience it in person.
I was excited to be the only watercolor artist exhibiting among a sea of talented musicians and educators. Bringing my art into this space felt like a perfect way to celebrate music and the people who teach it.
Art, Education, and a Weekend by the Harbor
Being surrounded by the colleagues and peers who work alongside my husband was a joy. I spent the weekend listening to your stories, learning about all the programs, and hearing the "why" behind your dedication to students.
It validates everything I do in the studio. When a violinist tells me, "You see the color in the music we make!" or a band director points out a detail in a trombone print that only a player would notice, I know I’m in the right place.
I came to Norfolk hoping to connect, and it didn't disappoint. Everyone truly embraced my work! I sold over 100 different prints, and I actually completely sold out all but four prints from my basket of my String and Orchestra prints.
To everyone who picked up a print to gift to a colleague, a student, or to decorate your own studio, thank you. It means the world to me that you choose my work to celebrate musical achievements.
And to those who missed out on the string prints, don't worry! I am back in the studio painting to restock in time for the holidays.
Beyond the Booth
It wasn't just about art; It was about community. I loved soaking up the atmosphere of Norfolk. From amazing dinners in the city to running the 5K distance in the Norfolk Harbor Race with the VMEA group, my heart is so full!
Looking Ahead
I am already counting down the days until next year when VMEA moves to Richmond. It feels fitting to bring my art "home" to RVA next time.
If you missed grabbing a specific print for a Christmas gift, or if you want to be the first to know when I’m popping up at the next event, please join my email list at the bottom of my site!
Thank you for welcoming me into your classrooms and practice spaces. It is a joy to paint the instruments you love.
